[JUNIOR HERALD] What is a UFO?
UFO stands for "unidentified flying object." Other common names used to
describe a UFO are "flying saucer" and "spaceship." A UFO is any aerial object
that is unidentifiable. After the Second World War ... with the development of rocketry, people became
really interested in UFOs. Some people believe that UFOs are spaceships that
aliens from other planets are using to visit Earth. The term "flying saucer" came about as a result of the first famous UFO
sighting. In 1947, while flying his small plane, Kenneth Arnold claimed to have
seen a group of 9 crescent-shaped objects moving at a very high speed near
Mount Rainier in Washington state, the United States. He described the objects,
which he estimated to be moving at a speed of several thousand miles per hour,
to have moved "like saucers skipping on water." A newspaper then took up his
story but by mistake described the objects as being shaped like saucers. Thus,
the term "flying saucer" was born.
